The New Mexico Senior Olympics (NMSO) hosts Local Games happen each year throughout the state. There are 22 Local Game Sites statewide that help senior athletes practice, work on their game skills and get ready to compete on the national level. The 2019 National Senior Games, presented by Humana, is scheduled to take place in Albuquerque, NM from June 14-25, 2019. NMSO recently qualified more than 1,800 athletes at the annual State Games for both individual and team sports that will be held at the 2019 National Senior Games. Cecilia Acosta, Executive Director of the NMSO State Games, stated, β€œIt is our hope that New Mexico is well represented by a large delegation of athletes statewide from all 22 sanctioned game sites. The National Senior Games Association has sent notifications to qualified athletes and game registration opened in November with an early registration discount through February 28, 2019. The last day to register to compete is April 2, 2019.”
A statewide torch relay run will kick off in Silver City, NM on Saturday, January 12, 2019, to celebrate thousands of senior athletes 50 years and older who are involved in the Games each year. After the torch relay run in Silver City, four other cities will host a torch relay run each month leading up to the beginning of the Games. The Senior Games Flame will be carried by qualified athletes eligible to attend the 2019 National Senior Games. The local organizer for the Silver City area is the Copper Country Senior Games led by Mario Quintana, Local Game Coordinator. A Torch Celebration will take place Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gough Park Pavilion. The public is invited to attend the celebration along with a reception to recognize the accomplished local senior athletes with refreshments and entertainment. Anna Sanchez of the Albuquerque National Senior Games will attend the Flame Arrival in Silver City. The final leg of the torch relay run will take place at the official Flame Arrival Ceremony on Saturday, June 15, 2019, on Civic Plaza in Albuquerque, NM to commence the 2019 National Senior Games.
