The New Mexico Senior Olympics (NMSO) hosts Local Games happen each year throughout the state. There are 22 Local Game Sites statewide that help senior athletes practice, work on their game skills and get ready to compete on the national level. The 2019 National Senior Games, presented by Humana, is scheduled to take place in Albuquerque, NM from June 14-25, 2019. NMSO recently qualified more than 1,800 athletes at the annual State Games for both individual and team sports that will be held at the 2019 National Senior Games. Cecilia Acosta, Executive Director of the NMSO State Games, stated, “It is our hope that New Mexico is well represented by a large delegation of athletes statewide from all 22 sanctioned game sites. The National Senior Games Association has sent notifications to qualified athletes and game registration opened in November with an early registration discount through February 28, 2019. The last day to register to compete is April 2, 2019.”

NMSO invites the public to be on hand for an event with a statewide torch relay on the Plaza in Old Mesilla on Saturday February 16th at 1:30 p.m. Cecilia Acosta, Executive Director for NMSO stated the “Program will celebrate and give some “love” to all local game athletes involved in local games and athletes that have qualified to compete at Nationals”. The statewide torch kicked off in Silver City, NM last month to celebrate thousands of senior athletes 50 years and older who are involved in the Games each year. After the torch relay run in Old Mesilla, four other communities will host a torch relay run each month leading up to the beginning of the Games. The Senior Games Flame will be carried by qualified athletes eligible to attend the 2019 National Senior Games. The celebration will recognize accomplished local athletes and follow with a small reception of refreshments and entertainment. Anna Sanchez of the Albuquerque National Senior Games will be on hand to energize athletes to register for Nationals. The Torch will be passed on to the Mescalero tribe who will be in attendance for the hand-off. The final leg of the torch relay run will take place at the official Flame Arrival Ceremony on Saturday, June 15, 2019, on Civic Plaza in Albuquerque, NM to commence the 2019 National Senior Games. Come join us on the Plaza in Old Mesilla at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, February 16th, the weekend of love! This is the first time the Biennial National Senior Games will be held in New Mexico. Organizers expect approximately 13,000 athletes along with more than 15,000 of their family, friends, and fans. The National Senior Games are expected to generate over $36 million in direct economic impact for the state. Interested athletes 50+ can still compete in the Games at two open events (no qualification needed) for Power Walk and Tri –Relay for Triathlon; visit www.NSGA.com for more information.
