Ready to Run at National Senior Games in Iowa
This summer, seasoned runner Rita Vigil is lacing up her shoes once again as she heads to Des Moines, Iowa to compete in the National Senior Games. Representing New Mexico, Vigil will take on the 5K and 10K road races as well as the 800 and 1500-meter track events. While she enjoys all her events, it’s the long-distance road races that hold a special place in her heart.
Vigil’s love for running began in high school and continued at Alamosa State University—then known as Alamosa State College—where she ran competitively. Over the years, her passion for the sport never faded. Now, decades later, she’s still going strong and inspiring others through her dedication to fitness and friendly competition.
This marks Vigil’s fourth time competing at the national level and her seventh time at the New Mexico Senior Olympics state games. “Whether it’s the state or national games, I’m drawn to the competition,” she says. “There’s a great balance of support and competitive edge that is perfect.”
Rita and her husband, Tim Vigil, are both active NMSO athletes, often pushing each other to stay healthy and strong. “At first I wasn’t sure about competing in the NMSO games, but a friend encouraged my husband and I to give it a shot, and we haven’t looked back,” she recalls.
Now, she encourages others—especially former high school and college athletes—to consider giving the games a try. “I hear people say they’re nervous to compete because it’s been decades since they were athletes. But even if it has been a long time, NMSO will welcome you and you’ll be met with smiles and friendships that last a lifetime.”
Her memories of the National Senior Games are filled with cheering crowds and camaraderie. One of her favorite moments was when New Mexico hosted the 2019 national games in Albuquerque. She fondly remembers the pride of competing in her home state, hearing out-of-town athletes praise the beauty of her home turf, and, with a grin, admits she appreciated the altitude advantage.
For Vigil, it’s about competition and staying active for life. Fortunately, the NMSO provides that plus so much more. She’s excited to take the starting line once again this summer. “I can’t wait for this year’s
