Eugene Pettes
A Track and Field Hall-of-Fame Star and NMSO Devotee
Eugene Pettes, a seasoned competitor from Las Cruces, New Mexico, is gearing up for another thrilling year at the New Mexico Senior Olympics Summer Games and the National Senior Games in Des Moines, Iowa. Known for his prowess in track and field, Pettes is set to compete in a variety of events, including the long jump, high jump, triple jump, and the 50, 100, and 200-meter races. His dedication to the sport and love for competition has kept him at the top of his game for over two decades.
For Pettes, training is a year-round commitment. Living in Las Cruces allows him to enjoy pleasant weather, making it possible to train outside even in the winter months. “I’ve been competing in the Senior Olympics for 26 years now,” says Pettes. “I like to start training harder in early spring, around February or March, to prepare for the summer games.” His approach to training is disciplined and focused, as he continuously hones his skills in both running and field events.
A Hall-of-Fame high school track star, Pettes has always had a deep passion for athletics. His love for running and field events has remained strong throughout his life, and he decided to continue competing in the Senior Olympics once he turned 50. “I’m glad I’ve stuck with track and field all my life. It’s been good for me,” he shares. His years of experience and commitment to the sport have not only kept him fit but have also fueled his competitive spirit.
Pettes is also an enthusiastic advocate for encouraging others to compete in the NMSO. “I enjoy seeing others discover or continue their passion for track and field,” he says, but with a chuckle, he adds, “but I have ulterior motives, too. I like the competition!” Pettes finds joy in racing against his friends and pushing them to perform their best while striving to outdo them himself. His competitive edge remains sharp, and he’s always looking for new challengers. In fact, he often keeps tabs on runners from other states, using their stats as motivation. “I want to see if I can catch ‘em,” he laughs.
Pettes’ dedication and love for the sport have kept him competing at a high-level year after year, making him a formidable opponent and a lifelong athlete. His story is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the thrill of competition, proving that age is no barrier to achieving success and chasing your dreams.
