Seniors Go To Santa Fe |
T he
yearly celebration of Seniors in the Capital on February 12th, 2003 hosted over
700 participants. NMSO had encouraged any one over 50 or involved in Senior
Affairs to visit their legislators. The theme this year was intended to impress
upon the law making body how much seniors were involved in state and local
government by asking for their "piece of the Legislative Pie." Many brought pies
to give to their legislators to help make the point.
Several
New Mexico Senior Olympians were among the scheduled speakers including Anthony
DeNardis, 92, of Albuquerque. He expressed his gratitude on having the
opportunity to still be active and compete in programs like NMSO. He felt
strongly that activity was the key to his health and well-being.
Note: on April 14, Karen Baker, Albuquerque Coordinator,
informed NMSO Anthony had passed away. He will be missed.
Welcome New
Americorps* VISTA!
 New
Mexico Senior Olympics is excited to announce another addition to our corps of
local VISTA recruits. We welcome Mike Simione to our Health Promotion Advocacy
Team. Mike will be working in Dona Ana County to help provide assistance in
promoting health and fitness in the senior network, particularly the minority
sectors. Mike has already served the city of Las Cruces in several capacities.
He was one of last year’s Super Volunteers at the State Games, and we look
forward to using Michael’s previous experience to help us further our efforts to
increase our coverage and effectiveness among seniors. Mike started his VISTA
year on February 7th, 2003, and already he has recruited over 25 new
participants for the Doña Ana Local Senior Games.
Way to
go, Mike! .
