New Mexico Seniors Shine With Southwest
Sun!
 New
Mexico Senior Olympics sent numerous press releases to newspapers, sports
organizations, and radio and television stations this year to get the word out
about our terrific programs. We sent releases by mail, e-mail, and fax to make
sure everyone heard about our senior athletes. Before and during the Games, NMSO
press releases and radio advertising asked for Games volunteers, donors, and
spectators, and Sports and Fitness Expo participants. After the Games, a press
release with "fill in the blanks" was sent along with athletes’ results to local
coordinators for distribution to their local media outlets. One result of these
contacts was a colorful article in the July issue of
Mature Life
in New Mexico, a
publication of the
Albuquerque Journal.
The spotlight
was on Albuquerque athletes as they prepared for the New Mexico Senior Olympic
Games. On the cover was a photo of Colleen Burns, and her mother, Mary Kirsling,
in training. This teaser led readers inside to a terrific article and photos of
Michael Martinez, Jerry Berkouf, Jack Eichorn, and Orlando Garcia. They are each
great spokespersons for the Senior Olympic program. Included in the article was
mention of Golden Athletes Joanne Sprenger of Las Vegas and Jack Welch of Las
Cruces. New Mexico Senior Olympics sent a press release to all media outlets in
those cities and surrounding areas bragging about their accomplishments. We are
pleased that several publications ran the article or mentioned these special
folks in conjunction with the Senior Olympic Games.
If you have a copy of any article about Senior Olympics from
your area, we’d love to see it. Please send a copy to our office so we can add
it to our collection. And let’s keep working to get the word out about our
fantastic Senior Olympic programs.
Whew!
State Games were wonderful.
We hope that everyone that went had a great time.
Conference on Aging
We had barely made it back from State Games when Mandy Owens and
all NMSO VISTAs attended the Conference on Aging in Glorietta, August 6-8, then
we attended the State Recreation and Parks Conference, Sept. 11-13 here in
Roswell. Both were excellent and extremely informative. Look for Mandy and the
VISTAs at Prime Time in Albuquerque November 1-3
Results and Records
Finishing touches are being put on the
Results and Records
Book. Look
for your copy in the mail. All the Coordinators will receive one. If you haven’t
ordered one and would like to order one for yourself, send your name, address
and $10 to: Results and Records, NMSO, PO Box 2690, Roswell, NM 88202.
Photo Contest
The
Photo Contest and the evaluation summary will be featured in the
December Newsletter. Happy Halloween and have a great Thanksgiving!
National Update — Watch the mail!
You will receive at least two separate mailings, one from us
here at the State Office for Travel and Uniforms and one from Nationals for
games registration. Pay careful attention to each. We can not register you for
Nationals. You must do that directly with the NSGA on your own. We will send out
more information as we receive it comes in from Nationals.
