Super Star Volunteer appreciation programD id you know that more than 350 volunteers helped to make this year’s New Mexico Senior Olympic Games run smoothly? These folks provided first aid, prepared and delivered food and water, judged events, distributed medals, and much, much more.To recognize the great folks who help us each year, New Mexico Senior Olympics held our first annual Super Star volunteer Recognition Program at this summer’s Games. Each event manager could nominate an outstanding volunteer who had demonstrated extra efforts of commitment, hard work, and a passion for volunteering. From those nominees, a committee selected one "Super Star" each day. Super Stars received a special T-shirt, a balloon bouquet, recognition on the Super Star display board, a mug filled with chocolate covered pecans from J. Eric Chocolatiers in Mesilla, and a seat of honor at the Final Banquet. It was very difficult to choose just one winner each day from the tremendous nominations we received, but we did. Congratulations to Monica Marquez, Dance; Penny Gearou, Bowling; and Mike Simione, Administration! We received 18 nominations and at the end of the week, each nominee’s name was placed in a drawing for a "Weekend for Two" in Ruidoso. The winner of this special prize was Ivan Fernandez, who ran the tennis tournament desk. He arrived early and stayed late, and handled all the questions with great people skills. His personality really made the event for several seniors. Our thanks and congratulations to each of our 2002 Super Star Volunteers!
